The Toc H League of Helpers was formed in 2007 to address the problem of loneliness amongst the elderly. Our main focus is on visiting elderly folk in aged care facilities, especially those who do not have relatives able to visit regularly, and entertaining them with concerts. We have also made scrapbooks for people with dementia.
Our involvement has mainly been with the aged care facilities run by Wesley Mission at John Wesley Gardens in Geebung and Mercy Aged Care homes in Wooloowin and Nudgee. We have also performed at the Residence in Clayfield. Most of our members are very musical and we use these talents to put on concerts. Our choir has sung at the John Wesley Gardens Carols by Candlelight each Christmas for several years. Our Anzac concert features wartime songs and our Mercy Day concert features sacred songs. Both these and general Variety Concerts have been performed to entertain residents in aged care. As well as singing and dancing, some of our members play musical instruments. Our current membership consists of 10 ladies – most are in their twenties, but some are older. Men are not excluded and we would welcome any men (or women) who can sing in tune from sheet music, play a musical instrument or make a commitment to visit elderly folk on a regular basis. Although our focus is on the needs of the elderly, we care about children in difficult circumstances and each year we participate in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal. As well as organizing collection of shoeboxes from our churches and workplaces, some of us go to the Samaritan’s Purse Warehouse to assist there. In addition we support the Toc H Vietnam Training Partnership by helping raise funds to support disadvantaged children so they can continue their schooling. In 2010, two of our members, Flora and Leanne, traveled to Vietnam to see this project and others run by Youth With a Mission and Samaritan’s Purse. We also support other Toc H branches and encourage our members to participate in such events as the the Childhood Cancer Support Christmas Party and the Ekka Outing for sick and disadvantaged children. |
